The Quilietti Family

The story of a Scots Italian family

Alexander Morrison 1902-1952

It was on 28th January 1921 that he married Helen Denholm Crawford in Lady Glenorchy Church, Greenside in Edinburgh. He was in the Gordon Highlanders at the time they married and was living in Glasgow in the Maryhill Army Barracks there. Here he is above age 19 married to Helen Crawford only three months before.

The War took its toll on Grandad Alex as you can see by his worn look above. He became a Training Sergeant in WW2. Above is a bit of a letter he wrote to Peggy. She was very sick all her years and you can read the concerns of her dad. He died tragically at the age of 50 of an Hemorrhage with Hypertension which would have meant his heart gave out. Helen Crawford or Ma as we called her loved him so much. She would say to us as bairns that she had her own movie star. She was left with her large family of children and many many grandchildren. We counted over 60 grandchildren a few years and now of course great and great grandchildren. Gone but never forgotten. The family were so proud of their Army dad and heritage before them with Alex’s grandad being born in Edinburgh Castle and indeed their roots both to Aberdeen and Tongue in the Highlands

A BIT ABOUT THE GORDON HIGHLANDERS WW1

Alex Morrison joined this Regiment as his father before him had done. He would have been only 12 when War started so I suspect he joined as a Bandsmen then as they did allow young men to join for that specific reason. Possibly lying about his age and saying he was 14.

ALEX’S FAMILY IN THE GORDON HIGHLANDERS, ROYAL SCOTS and 93rd Foot Regiment over the 19th and 20th centuries

Alex’s older. brother Angus Morrison was also part of the Gordon Highlanders as we can see from his marriage certificate above. He was in the 3rd Battalion in 1917 during the War. They married in Nigg, Aberdeenshire. As you can see from the above the 3rd Battalion were stationed in Aberdeen.

Alex’s Father was also an Army Veteran. He had joined the Army – The Gordon Highlanders in 1888 and he left them in 1901. When the next War arrived He joined the Royal Scots Territorial Force in the Labour Corps . He was discharged however because of his bad eyesight. Great to get the description below 5 foot 7 it says . Hazel eyes and dark brown hair. He had a Thistle tattooed on his right forearm
