The Quilietti Family

The church records give us not only the names of our own family and ancestors but also those cousins, uncles, aunts and grandparents who lived  in the local village.   In the year 1893 when a local census took place there were only 90 families living in the hamlet.  Most of these would be related in some way or another.

These families had much social interaction and of course and well entwined with our own common ancestors.   Conti, Brucciani, Rocchi, Giovanelli and Tortelli and direct line ancestors but there are many more of the local families who are connected for example via the many many Conti cousins who were resident there at the time.

90 families inhabited the area and here are some connected lines.   Our family throughout the decades from when Leonardo and Eletta were married were always documented as familia 2,3 or 4 and always beside the Conti’s.  Eletta’s mother was a Conti and their family was many.   I do not know if this refers to their nearness to the Church or what.  In some years the house number is given.

The first page of the 1892 census shows the Quilietti family.   The priest of the time  changed the spelling of the name in the archives but it was always Quilietti.

The 1892 example above shows our family Leonardo, born 1835, his wife Eletta, daughter of Giuseppe.  Their children, Emilia, Augusto, Ermenia, Maria Domenica, Giuseppe and Adolfo.   The entry shows the Quilietti family as family 3 and house or ‘casa’ number 64 in the village.

Directly above this entry is that of Eletta’s grandfather Giuseppe Conti with his son Giuliano Conti and his wife and children .   This was typical of the entries throughout the decade following until some of the family moved away.   The entry would always show the children, and if they were away it told you where they were, America, Scotland or wherever.

1875 CENSUS

• SOME LOCAL FAMILIES in this census – when you search through the archives these are the main names of the folks from the village.   You will see much social interaction between the families and you can be assured that everyone will be related to everyone else through marriage.   There is an area in Castelvecchio Pascoli named Conti – and I assume it must be a large piece of land which belonged to the family at that time.   You can still see this on a map today.

  Nardini/Conti

  The Nardini families started up businesses in Scotland.   Pietro Nardini was 14 when he arrived in Paisley from Tuscany in 1890 and worked as a salesman to save up to buy a cafe. His three sons snapped up an old mansion on the front at Largs for 10,000 pounds. There, Augusto (Gus) drove the business, while Sandrino (Sandy) was the front-of-house man and Nardino (father of Aldo, Daniela’s father, and his brother Pete) was the financial brain of the business.
