Interesting to see the two Christian names Tom and Ernest stepping down through the generations.
Thomas Smith was Ernie’s 2nd Great Grandfather 1813-1861. His wife was Mary Ann Cox.
Thomas 1813 was from Liddington in Rutland, England. He was a Drover who was someone who would have worked droving farm animals. This occupation goes back to prehistoric times, when flocks of sheep and herds of cattle were driven long distances from huge manorial and monastic pastures to Middle Ages markets.
Ernie’s Great Grandfather Thomas 1845-1919 married Maria Hinton.. He was a Coachman by profession.

Ernie Smith 1875-1946 married Eliza Lemmons. The couple married on 13th November 1904 in Barnham, Northamptonshire, England.

Ernie left for Durban when he was 17 or 18. In South Africa he met and later married Connie [maiden surname unknown] They have two sons Gordon and Paul who were both born there.
